Trade Rules
Unacceptable Trade Items
This is a list of items we do not wish to see at Rendezvous.
It is not all-inclusive. Some items will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
Please remember this is a Fur-Trade Era, 1650-1840, event.
- African Bead Work- Jewelry, crosses, art, etc
- Antler Art- Chandeliers, candleholders, non-period carvings, exotic carved, etc
- Art/Paintings- thing Non-Period, open display of framed art, scenes painted on skulls, rocks, saw blades, buckskin
- Artificial Sinew- Is accepted as a thread, not a decoration
- Audio Tapes- Not openly displayed (period books are ok)
- Australian Goods- Musical instruments, dusters
- Badges- No post-1840 law enforcement, etc
- Ballpoint Pens
- Bead Work- Taiwan, doll necklaces, miniature beaded moccasins, plastic beads, no imported finished beadwork, or beadwork with plastic or artificial leather backing, etc
- Beaded Earrings- Beaded earrings were never made by Indians during the Fur Trade Era or even Reservation Era. They are modern Pow-Wow jewelry. They are sometimes considered rendezvous acceptable if they are not made with modern colors, styles of beads, and animal patterns
- Belt Buckles- Any modern design
- Belts- Anything modern
- Bird Houses- decorated or painted, gourd, etc
- Candles- No modern styling. Should be limited to white paraffin (accepted but not correct), tallow or Beeswaw.
- Cap Guns
- Cedar Tourist Boxes- Discretionary item, no modern closures, snaps, sythetic material
- Ceramics- Modern vases, cups, pots, masks, etc
- Cigarette Lighter Cases or Covers
- Civil War Era Goods
- Claws and Teeth- Any illegal animal or animal not in keeping with the spirit of the rendezvous- Note that state laws vary, it is up to the individual to know them before buying / selling.
- Clothing- Non-period zippers, plastic buttons, nylon, etc
- Copper- Bracelets or other jewelry stamped with tipi or thunderbirds, etc
- Cork (Pop) Guns
- Cowboy Era Goods- Clothing, riveted jeans, etc
- Crafts- Non-period
- Crystal Ball- Necklaces, earrings (claw, hand, wizard, etc)
- Dolls- Modern porcelain, rubber, Kachina, plastic parts, etc except "period-correct"
- Dream Catchers- Wall display, earrings, necklaces, etc
- Enamel Ware- Is not period, but is considered rendezvous acceptable
- Fart Spoons
- Fasteners- Snaps, Velcro, zippers, etc
- Feathers- Unnatural colors, illegal birds of prey, etc (feathers dyed natural colors are ok)
- Fima (Milded Clay)- Beads and jewelry
- Fireboxes- No legs longer than 12" and / or domed (BBQ-Style) lids
- Fish Assholes- (Spaghetti O's relabeled)
- Flags- No flags that are not reproductions of historical flags of pre-1840 nature, with the exception of the 50-star American flag
- Flutes- No bamboo or cane
- Food Items- Excluding small food items
- Furs- Fake, dyed bright colors, fake coonskin caps
- Glasses- "John Lennon" sunglasses with plastic ear or nose pieces
- God's Eyes- Or other glass objects of a modern decorative nature
- Guns- Non-period revolvers (cap lock rifles, Patterson ok)
- Hangers- Modern, wire (wood with metal hooks ok)
- Hat tacks, Pins,- No modern design, must represent pre-180 items
- Hats- Replicated or original pre-1840 design, style and spirit only. No victorian styles, fake fur hatbands
- Honey Sticks- Plastic
- Horns- Exotic carved or raw, horns that are not native to North America
- Horse Shoe Puzzles
- Incense/Scented- Oil None that cannot be documented as common use in North America prior to 1840 - no oil in modern containers, no incense sticks and trays - selling Sage/Cedear bundles is acceptable
- Key Chains- Any
- Knives- "Must be pre-1840 in style", folding fishing knives, plastic handles, multi-colored handles, snap sheathes, Pakistan-type with unnatural handles, boot knives, Malaysian-style kriss knives (wavy blades), Stainless Steel. Artificial Ivory accepted due to federal laws on Ivory. Knives will not be sold to anyone under 16 years of age unless accompanied by an adult."
- Lanterns- Pakistan-type (brass with etched glass), kerosene lanterns
- Magazines, Books- Not openly displayed (period books are ok)
- Mandellas
- Masks- Any modern design
- Mexican Blankets- Pastel and fluorescent colors (old colors like Rio Grand are ok)
- Modern Jewelry- Rings, necklaces, earrings (excluding wedding rings)
- Money Clips- Any modern design
- Noise Makers- Any modern design, bamboo flutes, hand drums with two twisting beads (tin flutes, harmonicas, and jews harps are ok)
- Novelty Items- Road Kill items, rubber animals that jump out of a box, rattle snake eggs
- Nylon Rope- Or products made from it (excludingrope similar in appearance to sisal, hemp. or manila for use or sale)
- Oval Conchos- Oval Conchos are a later period than the Fur Trade
- Pencil Sharpeners- Novely style or plastic housings
- Pendants- No fantasy-style that does not have historical referance
- Photo Booths- Photographers are welcome as long as their setup is in the true spirit of the rendezvous
- Plastic- Any parts in products, bags, protective coverings. Small items such as gun parts, glass beads (etc) that come in plastic containers or shrink-wrap must be covered at all times. If a trader cannot risk displaying items without the plastic covering, use one for display without the plastic covering and hide/cover the remaining - Excluding rope similar in appearance to sisal, hemp, or manila for use or sale

- Quilts- Discretionary item
- Rain Sticks
- Reconstituted- Antler, ivory, and bone items
- Road Kill/Joke Items- (Does not mean fox, coyote, badger, and other assorted critters found on the highway)
- Rubber- Rubber band guns, Native American items, insects or animals
- Screws- Wooden products with visible screws (philips, Chromium, etc)Screw holes should be recessed and plugged
- Shirts- Must be in the style, cut and spirit of pre-1840 civillian, military or Native American
- Soaps- Must be pre-1840 in makeup
- Stones- Polished stone jewelry, modern cut stones, onyx jewelry, Hematite, Zingers, onyx fetishes
- Taxidermy Animals
- Turquoise and Coral- Jewelry - modern cut or production
- Utensils- Cheap chrome or silver plate items with or without antler handles (ice cream scoops, etc)
- Velcro Items
- Welded Items- Must be replicas of pre-1840 designs
- Wind Chimes
- Zippers
